New CD: Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony released by Deutsche Grammophon
To mark the opening of the new concert hall at the Sydney Opera House in July 2022, Simone Young and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection Symphony”. It featured 100 musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, 190 members of the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and an all-star cast including acclaimed Australian soprano Nicole Car and mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble. The concert also included the world premiere of a new work by composer William Barton: “Of the Earth” combines new and old and features clapsticks made from the floorboards of the old concert hall. A recording of the concert has now been released by Deutsche Grammophon on CD, vinyl and digitally. The recording is not only the debut of Simone Young and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon, but also the first time in the label's 127-year history that an Australian orchestra has been released exclusively on the “Yellow Label”.
